Jody Jaffe :: Quarter Horse ::

2026/30Flash Fiction

Southern Legitimacy Statement: I live in the Shenandoah Valley with too many horses. Though Northerner by birth, I’ve spent the most of my life below the Mason-Dixon line — more than enough time for me too lose any trace of the Philadelphia accent that tortured the vowel O.

Quarter Horse

My name is Trigger, Sandy, Buttermilk, Flicka, Fury, Misty, Snowflake, Princess, Stormy, Black Beauty, Pegasus and so many more I’ve lost count.

I am the holder of dreams. Each time a little girl or little boy climbs on me, and gives me my new name, I can feel their hopes. That one day my metal skin will be soft. That one day my body will covered in white or grey or brown or yellow fur. That one day my breath will tickle their face when the kiss my nose. That one day, I am real.

But until then, I am all they have — until the next 25-cent ride.
