Kathleen Kirk: “The Last Word”

Poetry

The Last Word

“I think this white horse was Christ,”
said Hare, the Outlaw of the Trace,
of the snow-white horse who barred his way.
In 1818, up near Havre-de-Grace,
the Outlaw held a lantern to his face
to give a gold watch back to a man
he’d robbed, who’d begged for it. So
we are taught never to weaken,
or get caught.

But beauty makes us

stumble, more than wine. The silence
of the wilderness taught Hare to warn
his men, and anyone who read
his words, back then, or since.

The light showed him for what he was.
