Dakota Hensley: The Button (poetry)

Poetry

Southern Legitimacy Statement: Like I said, I’m from a small town in Southern Kentucky. That small town is Harlan, in the Appalachian mountains. I’ve been here my entire life and my writing style is influenced by Delta Blues music.

THE BUTTON

I was searchin’ in my papaw’s old war trunk
an’ found somethin’ I thought mighty interestin’
It was a button, a simple button
With a note that read,
“The button Mama never got to sew into that dress she was a-makin’.”
Almost made me shed a tear
I never knew my Great-Mamaw
But Papaw mighty cared for her.
So, I guess she’s alright,
